One thing I get asked the most is how I’m able to show up so consistently. Showing up to teach dance, showing up to record and edit my podcast, showing up on social media, showing up to host events, and showing up for myself are all habits that I’ve continued to master over the last few years. And this isn’t because I’m the best of the best or because I have the “top podcast in the world”, or a group of fans swarming the comment section of my posts. I’d be lying if I said that was my driving force. I actually often don’t feel like showing up, but I know that my future self and the community that I’m building requires me to. The truth is that I continue showing up because every time I do, I gain more confidence points, which contributes towards my “success piggy bank”.
I think we often believe that confidence comes naturally or that certain people just ooze confidence based on looks, social status, their ability to be public facing, etc. But REAL, authentic confidence is often built behind the scenes, between the cringey posts, after the failures, or when no one is loudly rooting for you. Confidence is built with repetition, consistency, introspection, solitude, self acceptance, and in the absence of validation and perfectionism. It’s not always pretty but the journey is beautiful. Being able to look back and say, “Damn I was not feeling good at all that day but I still showed up and look where that got me”, is such a good feeling. THAT is what builds confidence: seeing your efforts pay off over time and watching yourself blossom, even when you feel like you’re just a weed in a field of sunflowers.
